Fionna from the Center for Teaching, Learning and Research (CTLR) at VCC welcomed participants to the Assessment Planning and Design Workshop and acknowledged the traditional territories of the Coast Salish peoples. Fionna emphasized the importance of assessments, including how they are informed by Indigenous knowledge. She highlighted the need for a holistic approach to assessments that caters to a diverse group of learners. The workshop discussed the purposes and roles of assessments, focusing on the importance of assessment planning and its role in improving student learning. Fionna emphasized the need to use a variety of assessment strategies, including formative, summative, and authentic ones that are connected to real-life experiences. She also stressed the importance of incorporating Universal Design for Learning (UDL) into both learning activities and assessments. The workshop concluded with the sharing of a sample assessment plan, which included the steps for creating an assessment plan, with a focus on scaffolding assessments from formative low stakes to summative higher stakes.
