We are VCC Online Developer and Leaders, and are excited to launch this first video in a “Let’s Talk About UDL” series. “Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a curriculum design, development, and delivery framework used to create inclusive and accessible learning environments. The goal of UDL is to ensure access to learning, while encouraging the development of expert learners.” (Mohawk College, n.d.)
We will create short videos, under 5 minutes, with tips on how to increase accessibility in your courses. You can access the videos through by going to our mediaspace.
In this video, we discuss the importance of laying the foundation for UDL in your courses by creating a welcome accessibility statement.
We have some resources for you, if you’d like to learn more about what we discussed in the video.
What is Universal Design for Learning (UDL)?
A great place to start understanding University Design for Learning is the CAST website. It explains the three principles of UDL and has a great video called “UDL at a glance” that breaks down each principle.
Welcoming Accessibility Statements
The University of Arkansas at Little Rock has a great article that provides more detail on writing Welcoming Accessibility Statements. It also has some great examples of statements.
In this episode, Thomas Tobin discusses how UDL reduces barriers to learning while maintaining academic rigor.
